"Trust no one not even yourself.", whispers in the Shadows

The candles flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls of the abandoned house. It was a cold, stormy night and we had all taken refuge inside. There were four of us - the crew of the ill-fated ship, the Sea Dragon, which had sunk in the fury of the tempest a few hours back.

I was still in shock, my clothes soaked, my body shivering with the cold and the trauma of almost drowning. But the others seemed to have fared worse. Marcus, the burly sailor, his face all battered and bruised, nursed a broken arm. Sarah, the young cook, her eyes vacant, her face ashen. And then there was Captain Blackwood, his grizzled face etched with deep lines of concern and anger.

"I can't believe it," Sarah muttered, hugging her knees to her chest. "The ship, it just...it just disappeared under us."

"Not just the ship, lass," Captain Blackwood rumbled. "A fortune in gold and jewels with it. A life's savings, all gone in an instant." His eyes narrowed suspiciously. "I wonder if it was an accident, or if someone had a hand in it..."

Marcus snorted. "What are you saying? You think one of us sank the ship on purpose?"

The Captain just gave him a hard stare. "I'm saying nothing, my boy. But I will get to the bottom of this. Mark my words."

As the night wore on, tensions rose. Accusations flew back and forth, each of us suspecting the others of treachery. I found myself questioning my own sanity, wondering if I could really trust my own perceptions.

Suddenly, a loud crash shook the house, followed by Sarah's terrified shriek. We all leapt to our feet to find her standing over Marcus's prone form, a heavy candlestick clutched in her hand, his head a bloody mess.

"I had to," she whimpered, staring at the stick in her hands. "He was coming for me. I saw it in his eyes."

Captain Blackwood's face darkened with fury. "You wretched girl. I'll make you pay for this."

But as he took a menacing step towards her, the floorboards beneath him gave way with an ominous groan. He plummeted out of sight, his panicked shout fading into the darkness.

Sarah stared after him, her eyes wild and confused. "What...what just happened?"

I looked from her to the gaping hole in the floor, a sickening realization dawning on me. "I think we've been played. This was never an accident. Or a murder. It was an elaborate trap. And we all fell right into it."

Sarah's gaze snapped to mine, shock and comprehension dawning. "Oh my God. The voices...the whispers...I thought I was going crazy..."

"No," I said softly, shaking my head. "We were all being manipulated. Gaslighted into turning on each other. But by whom? And why?"

We stood there in stunned silence, the wind howling outside.
